What to know before Cosmetic Dentistry

What to Know Before Cosmetic Dentistry Crowns and Bridges. Ocean Clinic

Crowns are an ideal way to rebuild teeth which have been broken/weakened by decay or a very large filling. The crown completely covers and protects the tooth underneath and restores it to its proper shape and size. They are also used to change the shape and colour of teeth – if you have large gaps between your teeth, your teeth are out of alignment or your teeth are discoloured then crowns could be for you.

Bridges are used to replace missing teeth. They look and function exactly like the natural teeth.

Traditionally crowns and bridges were made in the laboratory using a metal base with porcelain covering them to create a better colour. However, over time the gums tend to shrink and often an unsightly visible black or grey line starts to be seen at the neck of the tooth. Newer ceramic and hybrid materials allow us greater strength and of course much improved aesthetics at the time of placement and over time.

No prep veneers can be placed over your tooth without no alteration of your natural tooth structure. Lumineers are one well-known example of these types of veneers. However, since Lumineers were first introduced onto the market over 30 years ago we now have other brands of ultra-strong, ultra-thin porcelain materials with improved aesthetics. At the Ocean Clinic we craft our veneers using only the finest quality porcelain to replicate your tooth’s natural translucence and color and still maintain strength in very thin sections.

Patient testimony

Patients must keep up with your daily flossing and brushing and see our hygienist at least twice each year. Regular dental examinations and a sensible diet are needed to ensure no decay develops around the edges of the new crowns.

Crowns tend to be needed for teeth which are quite extensively damaged or have had repeated procedures over the years. These teeth are at risk of the “nerve dying” and root canal treatment being required. This is always assessed and discussed on a case by case basis.

Cerec crowns and bridges are very durable. Most patients have a very satisfying result for at least 10-12 years. Like veneers, over time, the gum may recede and the margins of the restorations become visible requiring replacement to maintain great aesthetics.

If teeth are missing then a dental implant can be used to fill the space instead of a dental bridge which relies on adjacent teeth. This has the advantage of leaving the remaining teeth intact and is therefore much more conservative. However, in many cases a bridge may be a quicker, more economical and simpler option.

On average we perform over 200 cerec crowns and bridges annually.
