SCAR CORRECTION

The correction of highly visible and unattractive scars is an important part of reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.

Scars have multiple causes, e.g. burns, accidents, prior surgery or skin affections like acne, and result from lesions to the skin that reach beyond the deep layer called “dermis”, as disruption of the highly organized fibers at this level leads to an repair process of the skin, leading to a scar.

The greater the area of injury, the longer the time of non-healing (like in infections or chronic skin irritations) and the bigger the distance between the healing skin edges, the bigger the resulting area of scar tissue will be.
For this reason, scar correction is based on the principle of replacing scar tissue with normal textured skin and minimizing the final scar.

This can be achieved in some cases by a simple scar excision, mobilization and adaptation of the skin and re-suturing with very fine stitches to reduce the scar a minimum; in more complex case we have to move the scar to a less visible area, change it direction, transplant skin from less visible areas of the body (especially in burn scars) or create new skin by skin expansion to replace the scar tissue.

Many of this procedures can be performed with local anesthesia as only the skin is affected, for larger areas or skin expansion treatments with expanders a hospital stay and some anesthesia might be necessary.
